Transition Rule:
If you took your English test before 7 August 2025, your result can still be used if:
- The test was taken on or before 6 August 2025, and
- It is within the 3-year validity period, and
- Meets the old score requirements (before the new law took effect).
That means:
- A PTE score of 65+ (before Aug 7) still qualifies you for Proficient English (10 points).
- A PTE score of 79+ (before Aug 7) still qualifies you for Superior English (20 points).
What This Means for You
If you took the test before 7 August 2025:
- You can still use your result if it’s within 3 years and meets the old score requirement.
- This means your current points for Proficient or Superior English are still valid.
If you’re taking the test on or after 7 August 2025:
- You need to meet the new score thresholds listed above.
- Scores are now adjusted by skill, meaning you need to score differently in each module (L/R/W/S).
Our Expert Insight
These changes seem fairer—listening and reading requirements for PTE are now slightly easier, while speaking and writing demand higher scores, especially for Proficient and Superior levels.
For example, under the new rules:
- Proficient Listening: dropped from 65 to 58
- Proficient Speaking: increased from 65 to 76
This shift emphasizes real communication skills, aligning better with actual English use in Australia.
