Australian Government announced the planning levels for the 2024–25 permanent Migration Program. The new program is set to accommodate 185,000 places, aiming to address skill shortages in priority sectors, support regional Australia, and foster social cohesion.

Skilled Migration Stream

The Skill stream comprises 132,200 places, accounting for approximately 71% of the program. This stream is designed to enhance the economy’s productive capacity and address labor market skill shortages, particularly in regional areas.

Key Changes in Skill Migration Stream Planning Levels

The planning level for the State/Territory Nominated category has increased to 33,000 visas, and the Regional category has also increased to 33,000 visas for 2024–25. These categories, nominated by state and territory governments, account for 36% of the overall planning level and 50% of the Skill stream. This increase supports economic and labor force challenges specific to each jurisdiction and the Migration Strategy’s commitment to regional Australia.

The allocation for Skilled Independent visas is set at 16,900 places for 2024–25. This is a decrease from the 2023–24 allocation of 30,375 places but remains higher than the COVID-era planning levels.
